$HAREWARE MARKETING $YSTEM
The $HAREWARE MARKETING $YSTEM, edited by Jim Hood, has for
the second year received the prestigous Public Brand Software
Trophy Award as reflected in their latest shareware catalog. In
addition, the latest edition of SMS is also shipping with a
sample copy of The Shareware Installation System by Paul Scanlon
which allows shareware authors to design a professional machine
code installation file for any shareware package. Even complex
installation sequences typically occupy less than 6,000 bytes on
most shareware packages.
SMS is a detailed resource for shareware authors who need
creative marketing ideas and a RATED mailing list of over 4,000
major shareware distributors, large computer clubs, key magazine
editors, recommended BBS systems and more! Software programmers
and authors can use the detailed mailing list to distribute
shareware in an effective, highly successful manner! Also
contains detailed newsletter and marketing guide which contains
dozens of creative tips, tricks and traps every author should
review. The database file is rated so you can mail shareware to
key vendors ranked A, B or C. The database file is supplied in
dBase file format. Program does NOT require color or special
graphics. Requires database program such as PC-File, dBase or
any database which can import dBase III format (DBF) files. Hard
drive suggested. Single issue registration available ($49.95) as
well as subscriptions - 4 quarterly issues per year ($175.)

The ShareWare Book
Compass / New England has recently published The ShareWare Book,
a book about developing and marketing software as a startup
company. While it emphasizes shareware as a first marketing
channel and provides extensive discussion of issues specific to
shareware -- such as distributors, packaging, licensing and
registration incentives -- the book also covers issues common to
all small software developers, like market research, publicity,
installation routines, the mechanics of getting manuals and
packaging manufactured, intellectual property rights, export
licensing, and pricing.
The book bills itself as a "Software Entrepreneur's Whole Earth
Catalog". It is full of the nuts-and-bolts information needed
(such as which forms you'll need to get a copyright and a UPC
code, with addresses) by startup software companies.
The registered version of The ShareWare Book (190 pp) comes with
a diskette with a database of the major international shareware
vendors and bulletin boards, includes an "SDN kit" for
submitting software to the Shareware Distribution Network, a
number of freeware utilities that will aid in compression and in
remote debugging, and a file of letters for everything from
applying for a controlled circulation subscription to DM News to
requesting a "Letter of Determination of Commodity Jurisdiction"
from the US State Department.
The shareware version is available as file ShareB.exe in CIS
IBMapp lib 8, in GEnie HOSB lib 12 as ShareBk1.exe, and on
bulletin boards as ShareBk1.*.
The registered version is available by credit card ($19.95 + $5
s&h) from Software Excitement! (800 444 5457) or by check
directly from the publisher (Compass / New England, POBox 117,
Portsmouth, NH 03802-0117).
NEW (ON-DISK) PUBLICATION FOR OWNERS
AND MANAGERS OF SMALL BUSINESSES
The HomeCraft Small Business Journal (HSBJ) is a new publication
that provides concise, useful, practical information for owners
and managers of small businesses. Its "get to the point"
approach gives small businesses help and information they can
use to improve both their productivity and their profits. Its
friendly style of writing makes the HSBJ enjoyable to read.
The HomeCraft Small Business Journal is published as an
electronic magazine and is distributed on floppy disks as
shareware. An opening menu serves as a table of contents from
which articles can be selected, read and printed. Each issue
includes two major articles; several smaller articles; a large
letter section where readers can offer their comments, exchange
ideas and ask questions; and editorial columns. Advertising is
available and can be included in the form of VGA graphics, ASCII
text or classified advertising.
The first issue of the HSBJ focuses on the shareware industry
with the feature articles providing the results of Steve
Hudgik's 1992 shareware author and vendor survey.
SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: An IBM compatible computer running DOS
version 3.2 or later is required. VGA graphics capability is
needed to read some of the advertising, however VGA graphics are
not required to read the HSBJ (it can be read on most monochrome
systems).
Every other issue of the HomeCraft Small Business Journal will
be distributed as shareware. The registration fee for a single
issue is $6.00. To register the current version and receive the
next, non-shareware issue of the HSBJ, the registration fee is
$10.
The current shareware version of the HSBJ is available through
most major shareware disk vendors and BBSs.
Published by: HomeCraft Software, P.O. Box 974, Tualatin, OR
97062. The HSBJ can be contacted via CIS ID # 71450,254 or
Prodigy ID # HPBN19A.
